Election of 1892

During the election of 1892 Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, and James Weaver ran for president. President Cleveland ran for his second term against President Harrison, which also ran for his second term. During the election of 1892 Cleveland defeated Harrison, which made him become the only person in US history to be elected to a second, non-consecutive presidential term. The new Populist Party, which took this election on by a storm, formed by groups from the Grange, the Farmers' Alliances, and the Knights of Labor, which racked in a ton of votes in this election but Cleveland won easily. The Republican Party supported high tariffs, bimetallism, stiffer immigration laws, free rural mail delivery, and a canal across Central America. The Populist Party was based on poor white cotton farmers from the south. The Populist candidate Weaver received strong support for his position promoting the minting of silver.
There was no campaigning by either candidate. Cleveland enjoyed solid support in the South and the Swing States, and managed to draw a number of votes from Republicans who were unhappy with Harrison. Weaver and the Populists became the first third party since
1860 to register electoral votes. A big affect of the election would have to be to Cleveland’s wife becoming ill and dyeing two weeks before the election.
